Matt McDonald understands he doesn't have to become a man of steel to help the Bowling Green State University football team win games this season. McDonald, a senior, is entering his third season as the Falcons' starting quarterback. Since he transferred to the Falcons program from Boston College, McDonald has made strides each season. "Working on just understanding that we have a bunch of playmakers now," McDonald said at the Mid-American Conference football media day. "I don't need to try to be Superman out there and make plays that aren't necessarily there and take what the defense gives me. Take, check down, be patient. And then when the opportunities arise, then go after them."

McDonald last season completed 236 of 393 passes (60 percent) for 2,555 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His completion percentage soared from 44 (54 of 123) in the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season. He also rushed for four touchdowns, including both BGSU scores in the upset at Minnesota. "Probably the biggest thing that he's learned is, now that we've got some skill guys, he doesn't need to make every play," Bowling Green coach Scot Loeffler said. "And at times whenever he had so much youth around him, he forced the ball in some tight windows." - Toledo Blade

For the first time in his IU tenure, Allen opens preseason without Peyton Ramsey or Michael Penix in his quarterback room. Ramsey has been gone for two years now, of course, but between them, he and Penix accounted for the bulk of positive production from the most important position on Allen's team between 2017-21. Now, Allen turns to a familiar face, Jack Tuttle, and a new one, Connor Bazelak, a transfer from Missouri.

Tuttle has the edge in terms of time in an Indiana uniform, but Bazelak brings impressive credentials of his own, having thrown for 2,548 yards and 16 touchdowns last season at Missouri. He has more than 5,000 career passing yards in college. With Donaven McCulley moved to receiver, and no other quarterback on roster having taken a collegiate snap, it's not surprising Allen has publicly declared Tuttle and Bazelak the frontrunners to be his starting QB for IU's Sept. 2 opener against Illinois. But somebody's got to win the job. There will be no more watched position battle in camp. - Indianapolis Star/News

Karl Brooks has been a staple on Bowling Green State University's defensive line since his true freshman season. Brooks, now a senior captain, appeared in all 12 games in the 2018 season. He established himself as a reliable contributor, starting eight times that season, including the final five. He has only improved since, and he appears primed for a big final season. "My goal is just to help my teammates," Brooks said on Tuesday at the Mid-American Conference football media day. "Be the best teammate that I can, put BG on the map, win of course. And personally, whatever's out there for me comes. My goal is to put my team first right now." Coach Scot Loeffler during the spring football game at Bowling Green State University's Doyt Perry Stadium in Bowling Green on April 23.

Last fall, Brooks finished the regular season with 7 1/2 sacks, which ranked fifth in the Mid-American Conference. He recorded five tackles and a sack against Tennessee in the 2021 season opener. "If you would have told me 2 1/2 years ago if he'd ever be a captain, I would've said no way," Bowling Green coach Scot Loeffler said after a game last season. "He's bought in." The 6-foot-4, 295-pounder finished the season with 42 tackles, including 12 1/2 for loss. - Toledo Blade
